Back to school is upon us! Whether your kiddo is having some separation anxiety or is nervous about starting at a new school, these books will help calm their nerves! Here are some of our favorite books for younger kids as they head into a new school year.

  1. The Day You Begin, by Jaqueline Woodson

This is a fantastic book for any kid starting school or beginning at a new school. It talks through all the differences between people and how kids can be kind no matter how different they are.

2. Llama Llama Misses Mama, by Anna Dewdney

I bought this book for my youngest, who, despite all his independence is quite attached to his mama. It’s a great book for younger kids just starting school and not wanting to be away from their parents.

3. The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn

Another great story for children who have a hard time being away from their mom. It’s sweet and helpful and makes me cry every time I read it.

4. The Pigeon Has To Go To School, by Mo Willems

Mo Willems is a favorite at our house, and this book does not disappoint. The Pigeon goes through all the emotions of starting school, from excitement, to worry, to denial. It’s a fun light-hearted book that will leave your kids giggling.

5. The Night Before Kindergarten, by Natasha Wing

Natasha Wing has Night Before books for almost every grade. They are amazing for kids that need to know exactly what is going to happen when starting something new.

6. We Don’t Eat Our Classmates, by Ryan T. Higgins

Another great book to let your child know what to expect when going to school, with a silly twist to teach your child how not to act during school, and how to make new friends.

7. How to Get Your Teacher Ready, by Jean Reagan

This is a nice silly way to go through the school day making sure your teacher knows how to do everything at school.

I hope these books help any children or parents who are having a tough time with going back to school this year!
