Charleston Moms CARE: The Avery Research Center

0

Giving back to our community is so important and we are so excited to present Charleston Moms CARE, a series where we’ll be highlighting different non-profits around the Lowcountry. We’ll tell you more about the organization and how you can get involved by volunteering!

This month we are featuring The Avery Research Center, which is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and promoting the unique history and culture of the African dispora, with an emphasis on Charleston.

The Avery Research Center

The Avery Research Center’s mission is to collect, preserve, and promote the unique history and culture of the African diaspora, with an emphasis on Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and beyond. As a part of the College of Charleston’s Library system, the Avery Research Center’s archival collections, museum exhibitions, and public programming reflect these diverse populations as well as the wider African Diaspora.

The services provided are:

  1. Avery Digital Classroom — virtual programming that provides digital lectures, film screenings, book discussions, and more.
  2. Lowcountry Digital History Initiative (LDHI) which is a digital public history in which The Avery Research Center is a partner.
  3. Collections — Houses approximately 200 hundred manuscript collections, over 5,000 printed items, ranging from standard texts, rare books and pamphlets, over 4,000 photographs, hundreds of reels of microfilms, VHS tapes, clipping files, and digital formats, and dozens of artifacts ranging from those that document slavery to sweetgrass baskets.
  4. Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI)-works with numerous partners to facilitate public events, exhibitions, and various projects that promote awareness of the history and ongoing struggles of racial injustice in Charleston, SC, and throughout the United States.

Ways to get involved

  • Partnership/Outreach — partner with the Avery Research Center on a public program or outreach
  • Archival donations — donating archival records, printed material, or artifacts
