My 10 Favorite Halloween Books for My Kids

0

Halloween. Must I say more? We LOVE Halloween around our house. My boys beg to get the Halloween decorations out in May — no joke. Our house literally looks like a skeleton exploded when fall comes around.

We also LOVE to read. So, naturally, the best thing ever is Halloween books. We have read so many Halloween books and we even keep them out year-round.

So let me share some of my favorites with you. Some of these books are better for older children, but a few are appropriate for all ages.

  1. Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex

We’ve all read Goodnight Moon, but have you read Goodnight Goon? This creative, spooky version of the classic board book is wonderful for the little ones. The rhyming rhythm of the book keeps the kiddos interested, and it’s a short read that can be recited every night!

2. Zombie in Love by Kelly DiPucchio

This sweet tale of a lonely Zombie looking for love is hilarious. The story starts with a Zombie putting out an ad, looking for a date to the Halloween dance. When he finally meets his love, they do all the zombie things together. And it gets even better — check out Zombie in Love 2+1 (They adopt a baby!). When you read this one, be sure to smile “like this!”

3. The Halloween Kid by Rhode Montijo

What a fun take on a Halloween book — Western style! I know when my boys were younger, they loved dressing up as a cowboy, and this was one they loved! Be ready to put your cowboy accent on when you read it.

4. Halloween Hide and Seek by Jill Kalz

This book is a nice break from reading; it’s an I Spy/Where’s Waldo type of book, but Halloween-themed! Search for black cats, witches, bones, and bats. Heads up — this one is hard! We play the “hot and cold” game where my son puts his finger on the page and I tell him when he is getting closer to finding the item. Have fun!

5. The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea

This is far from the scariest book ever, but it is so fun to read! It’s the tale of a sweet ghost and some forest creatures — sure to make your kiddos smile. Check out this read-aloud for the book!

6. Skeleton Hiccups by Margery Cuyler

Short and sweet, my boys love reading this book about a skeleton who scares his own hiccups away. This book is great for all ages as it isn’t spooky.

7. How to Outwit Witches by Catherine Leblanc

Ever wonder how you can outsmart a witch? Here is your guide. This fun, “witty” book is sure to keep your kids interested and give them some confidence when it comes to scary old witches.

8. Curious George Haunted Halloween by H. A. Rey

I have to say, this one is our family’s favorite. From the time they were little boys, this spooky (but silly) story was read every night. They even have the movie version through PBS. Be sure to hang on to your hat!

9. The Hungry Ghosts by Julius Lester

Ever wonder what ghosts eat? Read through this book and you will learn how ghosts fill their bellies. A little bit spooky but ends with a funny twist, your older kids will love this one.

10. Creepy Carrots! from Creepy Tales! by Aaron Reynolds

Okay, this one isn’t necessarily a Halloween book, but the fact that it’s creepy makes it a good one to read during this spooky season. Be sure to check out all of the other books in this hilarious series, perfect for your older kiddos.

Have fun reading all of these amazing Halloween books! Visit your local library or local bookstore to have a good read — and Happy Halloween!
