Birth Control After Baby

While I was pregnant, I decided I was going to get an IUD as soon as our daughter was born…but when I went to my post-op appointment, I talked myself out of it.

My doctor said if you were not going to keep in an IUD for at least a year that it really wasn’t worth it. At the time, I just couldn’t commit! What if it was inserted and something bad happened? When will I want another baby? Too many decisions for my new mom brain to handle.

My OB prescribed me a progesterone birth control pill (since I was breastfeeding), but I decided not to take it.

Months later my period came back with vengeance. And every three to four weeks after and after. It was horrible. Before we decided to try to get pregnant, I was on a “seasonal” pill and only had my period every three months and even then they were light and only lasted a few days. This “after baby” cycle proved to be too much!

So back I went to the doctor! I couldn’t handle the craziness. I got the same type of birth control I was on before baby. It was different brand, but I didn’t think much of it.

A month went by and I had absolutely no energy, no motivation and found it hard to get out of bed in the morning. I was confused and unsure what was going on. It took weeks before it occurred to me that it was my new birth control. The day after I stopped, I could already tell a bump in my energy. What is going on with these hormones?!?

I never expected birth control after baby to be so complicated! An OB/GYN told a friend that it can take a year from when your period returns for your hormones to level out and get back to “normal.” It is a hard thing to explain and even harder to remedy.

I didn’t want to go months trying new pills only to go off of it again in a year. So, as of now I decided to wait things out and do without birth control. If we are blessed with a second child, I am ready. If not, great! But at least after baby #2, I will have more of an idea of what to expect.

What was your birth control experience like after baby?
