Q: When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?
A: As soon as the first one erupts! Be sure to brush twice daily, establishing healthy habits from the very start.
Q: How much toothpaste should I use?
A: It is recommended that children up to age three use no more than a smear or “rice-size” amount of toothpaste, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Beginning at age three, once your child can spit effectively, a “pea-size” amount is recommended.
Q: Should I use a fluoridated toothpaste?
A: While you may have heard conflicting opinions on fluoridated toothpaste, today’experts recommend its use. Fluoride strengthens enamel, which is especially important in the development of baby teeth.
Q: What about a “training” toothpaste?
A: While some brands offer “training” toothpaste, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends using the appropriate-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste instead. Most “training” toothpaste does not contain fluoride, lacking the powerful tooth-strengthening additive.
