Feel Like Dancing? Yes Way, Rosé to the Charleston Mom Prom!

The 8th annual Charleston Mom Prom is almost here! Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 5 from 7 to 11 PM at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Charleston Harbor Mount Pleasant.

What’s better than dressing up, going to a fancy ballroom, and dancing the night away with your favorite ladies? Doing all of that and raising money for a great cause! The Charleston Mom Prom benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for the progressive, genetic lung disease that limits the ability to breathe over time.

Sara Shiveler, the founder of the Charleston Mom Prom, began her involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation when her son Brayden was diagnosed with CF at ten days old. Sara explains that the median age of survival for someone born with CF at that time was mid-thirties. Now that Brayden is 11 years old, the median age of survival for someone born today with CF has risen to 50!

Sara thanks the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and its supporters for this incredible improvement in the span of just eleven years. However, improvement does not equal cure and there’s still work to be done.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is committed to finding a cure through clinical and laboratory research, treatment option exploration, drug development, and fundraising. CFF also provides comprehensive education, an online support community, and access to clinical trials for people with CF. The foundation is solely funded by donations, such as the monies raised by Great Strides, its national fundraising walk.

Participating in Great Strides every year encouraged Sara to start her own local fundraiser. She wanted to host a fun, unique, community-wide event to raise awareness and stumbled across some information on the Mom Prom. Mom Prom is a nationwide ladies’ night out to benefit a charity of the host’s choosing. Sara loved the idea and texted some of her other CF mom friends who agreed it would be a blast.

The Charleston Mom Prom was born!

Taylor Lentz, a board member of the Charleston Mom Prom, is looking forward to this year’s event because her four-year-old daughter Aubin will be the Mom Prom CF Ambassador. Aubin was diagnosed with CF last year. Taylor, who previously worked as a nurse for cystic fibrosis patients, understands the unique treatment challenges faced by people with CF.

Taylor explains it’s encouraging for her to see how the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation uses the money raised each year to make real, evidence-based, positive changes in the lives of those with CF. Taylor hopes to organize her own CFF fundraiser in the future, perhaps a Halloween party.

The Charleston Mom Prom is for all women ages 21 and up. It’s a ladies’ night out so leave the men at home. Prom attendees can dress to impress as classy or tacky; Best Dressed prizes will be awarded in both categories. Wear an old prom dress, swap with a friend, find one at Goodwill, or splurge on a fabulous new gown. Anything goes as long as you look and feel great!

Tickets are selling out fast so make sure you get yours soon. Sara will be keeping a waitlist so post on the event page if you need a ticket but couldn’t get one in time.

If you are unable to attend this year, you can still participate in the virtual auction starting on Friday, January 28 at noon. There will be some amazing items and services donated by local business sponsors. You can also make a tax-deductible donation to the cause here.

Sara says, “I’m thankful for the support of the sponsors and humbled by the outpouring of support from our community.” Both Sara and Taylor know the success of the Charleston Mom Prom will help finance the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in its mission to cure CF and make breathing easier for Brayden and Aubin.
