Pulling over for a watermelon or strawberries from a roadside stand are some of my favorite childhood memories. I still pull over to a roadside stand while I am traveling to see what kind of deliciousness the farmer is offering. (My husband really appreciated this as we were traveling across the USA with our dog and 25 foot travel trailer!)
When I was growing up, we got all of our food from the grocery store – farmers markets did not exist in Houston, TX. Fortunately, here in Charleston they are everywhere and some are ALL YEAR LONG! No longer do I have to wait for a road trip to see what the local farmer is producing. Farmer’s markets are truly the next best thing to growing your own food. When your produce comes from a local farmer, you are getting the freshest, most seasonal food. When food does not have a long transport time, then you and your family are getting the most minerals, vitamins, and enzymes that you can get from produce. Plus, you are supporting your local economy and keeping sustainable farming practices active and growing.
Farmer’s markets are fun! Many of them have live music, events for kids, and some are even pet-friendly. The “food truck” movement has hit Charleston hard which means delicious food from a truck while you load up on your week’s veggies, fruit, meat, jellies, and so much more. In the Charleston area we are blessed with many farmer’s markets to choose from (including some “mobile” ones).
