Nestled in West Ashley are 80 acres making up one of South Carolina’s state parks and Charleston’s only “natural habitat zoo” — Charles Towne Landing!

A historic state site, it is located off of the Ashley River and is known as the birthplace of the Carolinas. It’s host to six miles of trails, an animal forest, the Legare Waring House, and “The Adventure” — a replica 17th-century sailing ship that you can hop aboard!

The Visitor Center has an interactive, hands-on exhibit inside that’s great for curious kids! Follow the story of Charleston’s history as you wind through the museum. (You’ll also find nice and clean restrooms here, picnic tables, and more!)

With six miles of trails for you to explore be sure to bring that stroller for little legs. If you’re wanting to make a day of it, pack a picnic lunch! There are so many beautiful spots to check out along the trails. Homeschooling or have a history buff? There’s even a designated “History Trail” you can follow that teaches you all about the colony!

The Animal Forest is home to several local animal friends — otters, wolves, bobcats, a bear, and more! (Pro Tip: Before you go, check their website/call ahead and check to see what exhibits are open if you have an animal lover! My daughter was sorely disappointed to find that most were closed the day we went, but she did catch sight of some bison!)

Charles Towne Landing Animal ForestIf you’re a toddler mama like me, check out their Toddler Time on Tuesdays in November from 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. They do crafts, chat about animals, and more!

Down along the river you’ll find “The Adventure” — perfect for your explorers! Everyone has a chance to hop aboard this interactive sailing ship — it’s really neat to see!

This park is perfect for every age. Several mamas have mentioned to me that they like to walk the trails with their new babes. You can even rent bikes with your older kiddos, so no season of life is left out, and you can easily cater it to your needs!

Local Mom Stop: Muddy Waters Coffee Bar can be found on your way depending on the direction you drive in, otherwise a Starbucks is right down the lane!
