Giving back to our community is so important and we are so excited to present Charleston Moms CARE, a series where we’ll be highlighting different non-profits around the Lowcountry. We’ll tell you more about the organization and how you can get involved!
This month we are featuring Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR) whose belief is that every child has intrinsic value, and deserves to be loved, nurtured, and protected.
Lowcountry Orphan Relief
Lowcountry Orphan Relief’s mission is that no child should be left without basic necessities in life, regardless of their circumstances. LOR’s vision fuels the mission to provide aid and support services to children identified as at-risk for abuse, abandonment, and neglect.
The services provided are:
1. Just in Case Closets — emergency clothing closets for students in need at Title 1 public schools in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties.
2. Beach Day — an upcoming (August 13, 2022) annual program hosted on Folly Beach for children in foster care.
3. Make a Child Happy Day — A fall festival (November 5, 2022) for children in foster care.
4. Care Kit Program — Each child served by LOR receives one of their signature Care Kits, completely catered to that individual child and their needs. Each Care Kit includes clothing, shoes, new toiletries, books, and stuffed animals. LOR partners with hundreds of other agencies and nonprofits, including DSS, currently serving over half of the children in the state who are in foster care presently. Last year alone, LOR distributed over 5,100 Care Kits. Since their nonprofit status in 2006, they have distributed over 42,000 Care Kits.
Ways to get involved
- Volunteer at the Distribution Center
- Become a Neighborhood Captain
- Set up a fundraiser or collection drive
- Donate items for the Care Kits and/or monetarily
