We’re bringing the heat to Charleston this February as we party for a purpose at the 9th annual Charleston Mom Prom: Miami Nights! Tickets are selling fast for this one-of-a-kind ladies’ night out which benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Grab your girlfriends and join us for an evening of fun and dancing you do NOT want to miss!

My name is Sara Shiveler and I am the founder and coordinator of Charleston Mom Prom. When my son was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at just 10 days old, I was told that the median life expectancy for someone born with the disease at that time (2010) was mid-thirties. As a first-time mom, this news was devastating and completely turned our world upside down. I became involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation right away to get support from other CF families, help spread awareness, and fundraise. After a few years of asking family and friends to support my efforts, I knew I wanted to expand my reach and do more to raise funds to support vital research needed to advance the medications and therapies available for those with the disease.

In 2014, with the encouragement and support of the local South Carolina CFF chapter and a few other CF moms, the first Charleston Mom Prom was held. The event continues to grow each year, and to date has raised over $100,000 for the CFF! The support of Charleston Mom Prom from this community has been amazing. I’m incredibly grateful that so many women and local businesses have embraced this cause, and continue to fight alongside me for a cure. Through my involvement with the CFF, I have met some remarkable children and adults who battle CF each and every day. Their tenacity and courage to fight this disease head on has further fueled my mission to do my part to put an end to CF. Alone, I can only do so much, but together with so many other CFF supporters, I know that we can and will cross the finish line and make CF stand for Cure Found!

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has fueled dramatic improvements in cystic fibrosis research and care. Because of the Foundation, people with CF are living longer and achieving milestones once not thought possible; attending college, pursuing careers, getting married, and having families of their own. The outlook for people with CF continues to improve year after year. However, there is still no cure for CF, and it is because of the tireless efforts of the CFF, generous donors to the Foundation, and events like Mom Prom that raise vital funds to continue pertinent research that we are closer to a cure today than ever thought possible, even a decade ago.
