Top 10 Things to do in Summerville this Fall

0

It’s finally Fall in the South!   The weather has cooled down a bit, the mosquitoes are gone {for a couple of weeks, anyway!}, and FOOTBALL season is here!  There are a ton of exciting activities going on all over the LowCountry, but today I’m gonna focus on the {not so} little town of Summerville.

Top 10 Things to do in Summerville this Fall

Here are my Top 10 Things to do in Summerville in the Fall.

Top 10 Things to do in Summerville this FallOne of the Storytellers captured by the Charleston Scene

1:  Ghostwalk on Hutchinson Square October 24th 6-9pm $4 advanced, $6 that day

Three different storytelling “routes” {G, PG, and PG-13} are offered as costumed kids and their parents visit some of Summerville’s Historic homes and shops to listen to spooky tales.  Food trucks, popcorn, street games and hayrides are also offered around Hutchinson Square.

2: Scarecrows on the Square October 17th-November 1, free

Hutchinson Square is lined with scarecrows, pumpkins, scenes from favorite movies, and interactive displays…all made by local churches, schools and businesses.  Vote for your favorites with a quarter in one of the local shops.  Proceeds go to the Summerville School Supply Fund.

3: Farmers Market through December 19th, 8-1pm Saturdays, free

Behind Town Hall {and the free parking garage} an explosion of color and music happens every Saturday morning.  The Summerville Farmers’ Market features local produce, pasta, meat, peanut butter, and crafts.  And don’t forget chickens!

4: Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour Sunday, October 4th 1-5pm, $50

The Kitchen Tour has turned into a tradition for my mom and I….we volunteer with it every year in order to get half price tickets {we only work one shift and then tour the homes!}.  Each year, the tour focuses on 10-12 houses in one of Summerville’s Historic or Custom Home neighborhoods, and some of the LowCountry’s best restaurants and chefs show up with mind blowing samples from their kitchens.  I just love getting to see the interiors of some of those beautiful old houses!

5: Bethany Tea Room: lunch from 11:30-2pm September 28th-October 9th

Whether you dine in or carry out, you’ll be treated to homemade Southern cooking and fresh desserts.  Although the atmosphere is casual and reservations are not required {but encouraged for large groups}, you’ll be seated by a tuxedo-clad maitre d’.  Don’t forget to stop by the market after your meal to buy crafts, children’s items, ornaments and home goods…or maybe just some fresh apples or mums!

6: West Farm Corn Maze : September 25-October 31… Fridays 5-10pm, Saturdays 12-10pm and Sundays 1-8pm $10 adults, $6 kids or $5 without the corn maze

One of our favorite Fall traditions, West Corn Maze is a little outside of Summerville….but well worth it.  For way cheaper than some of the other Corn Mazes in the LowCountry, it also features a petting zoo farm, hay bale mazes, slides, sandboxes, Food trucks, Pumpkin patch and play area for toddlers.

7: Coastal Carolina Fair: October 29th-November 8th

Funnel Cakes, Deep Fried Everything Oreos, Kiddie Rides, Concerts.  We count down the days until the Fair every year.  With our family of five, it costs us an arm and a leg to go {around $100}…but well worth the memories, I think!  You can buy tickets for rides throughout your visit or purchase wristbands for unlimited rides {the better deal as one ride costs between 3-6 tickets}.  Our favorite part of the Fair is the animals from the 4H club, and the music.  Check out the entertainment schedule here.

8: Third Thursday in Downtown Summerville, 5-8pm rain or shine

Wander the streets of Historic Downtown Summerville anytime of the year, but on the third Thursday of each month, get wined, dined and entertained too!  The streets around Hutchinson Square and Short Central are turned into a party as local musicians play, shop doors are opened and local restaurants and food trucks offer up goodies.  Meet some neighbors, check out some of the local artisans or just enjoy the weather in Hutchinson Square.

9: Pumpkin Patch at Knightsville Methodist Church: Starting October 3

I’m sure there are tons of other pumpkin patches around town, but this one is FREE!  They have a gazillion pumpkins scattered around the property…perfect for photo ops!  But what I like best about these pre-picked pumpkins are that they aren’t all beautiful.  I’ve gotten some of the bumpiest, gnarliest, white/green/purple-est pumpkins I’ve ever seen at this patch.  And all of your harvest purchases go to the church, which in turn, is used for good in the community.

10: Summerville Greenwave Football Game

Like I said before, what’s Fall in the South without football?  You could head to any of your local high school team games….but on Friday night we head into town to cheer for our kids’ future alma mater…the Summerville Greenwave.  This fall the Greenwave are heading onto the field without the  beloved Coach McKissick, for the first time in 65 years after celebrating his retirement last year.  The stadium is in downtown Summerville, and the local businesses just about shut-down during home games {and be sure to catch one of the sporadic parades downtown to celebrate the marching band, cheerleaders or Homecoming!}.  It’s a super fun, family friendly evening…fitting of every Southern small town.

Enjoy the Fall in Summerville!
