5 Charleston Desserts for Postpartum Care

“What’s one thing you are doing to better take care of yourself?”

This question was recently posted on the Charleston Mom Blog contributors’ FB page. It was basically asking, as a busy mom, what do you do for self-care? Because we all agree, taking care of ourselves is important.

My fellow contributors had some great responses: making time for yoga, having a girls’ weekend, hiring someone to do the house cleaning, buying ready-made meals, sending the kids to school, starting a business, etc.

My two-month postpartum self was stumped. Self-care?

You mean like sleeping?

Taking a shower?

Who has time for self-care when you’re nourishing, comforting, and cuddling a new baby?

Later that night, while my husband was going through our three-year-old’s bedtime ritual (and the baby was taking a snooze), I snuck downstairs to eat the last few bites of a cheesecake. Then it hit me. Desserts. That is my self-care during this postpartum season of my life.

Some may call it a guilty pleasure, but I feel no guilt. In this season that I am in, this is my self-care, a.k.a. postpartum plan: I say yes to dessert! And I will hide in the pantry so I don’t have to share!

Since my move to Charleston, life has been busy. Here are the 5 Charleston desserts I’ve discovered and are currently drooling over:

East Bay Deli’s cheesecake

Two words: creamy and delicious. Like I mentioned above, I can take a few bites, and the goodness lasts all week. Or, I can eat all of it with a glass of milk. It really depends on the day.

Blue Rose Cafe’s buttermilk pie

Park Circle Creamerys chocolate ice cream

All the ice cream is made in-house and OH-SO-GOOD, but chocolate is my favorite. And, I’m not the only one in my family who thinks so. (Yes, sometimes I share.) If you want to share and make a family event out of it, check out these other great places in Park Circle.

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits’ shortcake biscuit with blackberry jam

Saffron Restaurant and Bakery‘s desserts

5 Charleston Desserts for Postpartum CareHave you been here? The dessert options change seasonally, but if you get the chance, I recommend strawberry shortcake. Seriously though, I don’t think there’s a bad dessert choice in the place.

So there you have it. My guilty pleasure postpartum self-care plan.

How do you take care of yourself in your season of motherhood? And more importantly, what Charleston desserts do you LOVE? I’d love to check them out.
